Where do your prompts actually run? Inside France's data centers

All comparisons

48%: that's AI's share of new data center demand in France in 2026, up from just 2% in 2021, according to Cushman & Wakefield. Worth asking where the prompts you send every day actually run, and whether it's really French soil doing the work.

Verdict

AI's share of new data center demand in France jumped from 2% to roughly 48% between 2021 and 2026 (Cushman & Wakefield), driven by projects like Mistral AI's 44 MW data center in Bruyères-le-Châtel and the future 1.4 GW AI campus backed by Nvidia, Bpifrance and MGX in the Paris region. But most of the electricity French data centers already use, about 2.7 TWh in 2024 according to regulator Arcep, still goes to ordinary cloud computing, not AI.

Figures updated on June 30, 2026

How many data centers actually run AI in France?

About 300 data centers are recorded in France as of 2026, according to grid operator RTE, including eight connected directly to the high-voltage network for a combined 800 MW. Arcep's latest survey (May 2026) counts only 160, self-reported by 23 operators; the rest belong largely to operators who don't publish figures, often the biggest AI hosts. Mistral AI's data center in Bruyères-le-Châtel, 30 km south of Paris, shows what the newest generation looks like: 44 megawatts, about 13,800 Nvidia GB300 chips, funded by $830 million in debt, announced in March 2026 as going live by the end of Q2.

How much electricity do these data centers use?

2.7 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024: that's what Arcep-tracked operators reported, up 38% over three years (from 2.0 to 2.7 TWh) and 12% in the latest year alone. RTE, which covers the whole fleet including non-reporting operators, puts the total closer to 10 TWh a year, nearly 2% of France's electricity consumption, on track for 15 to 20 TWh by 2030 (about 3% of the mix) and 23 to 28 TWh by 2035 (about 4%). The two figures don't measure quite the same scope, which explains the gap: it's the order of magnitude that matters here, not TWh-level precision.

How much of that growth actually comes from AI?

48%: that's AI's share of new data center demand in France and Europe in 2026, up from just 2% in 2021, according to real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, which projects it will near 90% by 2030. On the ground, that means enormous projects: Mistral AI's 44 MW site in Bruyères-le-Châtel, and above all the future AI campus backed by Nvidia, Bpifrance, Mistral AI and the MGX fund in the Paris region, announced at 1.4 GW of capacity and 8.5 billion euros of first-phase investment, with the target since raised to as much as 3 GW in 2026. For scale: 1.4 GW is roughly the output of a French nuclear reactor.

Do your prompts actually run in a French data center?

Not necessarily, it depends on the service. By default, ChatGPT relies mostly on Microsoft Azure infrastructure spread across Europe and the US, and Anthropic's Claude stores data in the US unless deployed specifically through AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI in a European region (Paris, Frankfurt, Ireland). French alternatives exist: OVHcloud runs 43 data centers, 20 of them in Europe, with hosting guaranteed on national soil, and Scaleway, part of the Iliad group, runs over 5,000 Nvidia H100 and H200 GPUs across its Paris, Amsterdam and Warsaw data centers, notably to train Mistral AI's models. Scaleway won a share of the European Commission's 180 million euro sovereign cloud contract in April 2026, alongside a consortium that includes OVHcloud.

What does that consumption look like at the scale of your own prompts?

About 0.25 TWh a year: that's what every French person's AI prompts would add up to under this site's own assumption (12,000 prompts a year per person, 0.3 Wh each), if the whole population used AI that intensively. A deliberately high-end scenario, set against the 2.7 TWh Arcep measured for all French data centers: even in that maximalist case, AI would stay under 10% of the total, the rest going to ordinary cloud computing, web hosting and storage. French data center consumption is exploding, but AI remains a growing slice of it, not the majority, at least not yet.

Frequently asked

How many data centers are there in France?+

About 300 according to RTE in 2026, but only 160 show up in Arcep's latest environmental survey (23 reporting operators, May 2026): the biggest AI hosts don't always publish their numbers.

Is AI responsible for the rise in French data center electricity use?+

Increasingly, yes: AI's share of new data center demand went from 2% in 2021 to about 48% in 2026, per Cushman & Wakefield. But the electricity the existing fleet already uses, about 2.7 TWh in 2024 (Arcep), still goes mostly to ordinary cloud computing.

Do my AI prompts run in a French data center?+

It depends on the service. ChatGPT and Claude rely by default on mostly US-based infrastructure (Azure, AWS). Alternatives like Mistral AI, OVHcloud or Scaleway host in France.
