How much does a Claude prompt consume?
Anthropic has published no official per-prompt consumption figure for Claude: no electricity, water or CO₂ number (verified on June 30, 2026). Based on values published for comparable models, a median text prompt most likely sits between 0.24 and 0.34 Wh; that is a methodological estimate, explained below, not vendor data.

Why is there no official figure for Claude?
Anthropic has published neither a per-prompt value, nor a life-cycle assessment, nor a standardised emissions report as of our last check. Only three players have released per-request figures so far: Google (Gemini), OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Mistral (Le Chat). This page will be updated as soon as Anthropic publishes; if an official figure escaped us, tell us through the contact page.
How can an order of magnitude be estimated honestly?
By bracketing: comparable conversational models run on similar hardware in similar data centers. Google publishes 0.24 Wh per median text prompt (Gemini, full-stack measurement), Epoch AI estimates ~0.30 Wh for ChatGPT and OpenAI reports 0.34 Wh. Barring an architectural quirk, a standard Claude text prompt most likely falls within that 0.24 to 0.34 Wh range. Our converter files it at 0.3 Wh, like other standard models.
What about Claude's reasoning modes?
As with other vendors, reasoning modes (the model generates intermediate steps before answering) multiply the tokens produced, hence the consumption: public benchmarks place such requests around 15 to 30 Wh, i.e. 50 to 100 times a simple text prompt. Here again, no official Anthropic figure: these are independent measurements on comparable open models.
What do 10 Claude prompts a day add up to over a year?
Using the standard 0.3 Wh assumption, 10 prompts a day for a year come to about 1.1 kWh: barely more than one dishwasher cycle, or about an hour and a half of oven use. The individual impact stays small; the real stake sits at the scale of billions of daily requests across all platforms.
A Claude prompt in everyday actions
No official figure exists for Claude: these equivalents use the site's standard assumption for a text prompt (0.3 Wh, 0.3 mL, 0.2 g), not vendor data.
